Captain America 3 to be filmed here

Just as Marvel’s Ant-Man gets under way with production at Pinewood, numerous online reports are saying that Captain America 3 will be the next big budget Marvel project to film in Fayetteville.

The second film in the Captain America franchise opened this year and has already grossed nearly $260 million domestically, making it the second biggest box office hit of the year behind Marvel’s surprise smash hit Guardians of the Galaxy.

Actor Chris Evans has helmed the first two Captain America films playing the titular character, but some of the details leaking out over the past few days about the third film suggest its still unclear whether he will headline again.

Regardless of the details of casting and plot, just about every superhero franchise put out by the partnership of Disney and Marvel has turned to gold. If Marvel is comfortable filming at Pinewood Atlanta it will mean a steady stream of business for the studio for the foreseeable future.

At the grand opening gala for Pinewood Studios in January, developer Jim Pace of Group VI said a “higher up” with the big production company behind the first major Pinewood project was “over the moon” about Pinewood Atlanta.

It was an open secret at the time and now public knowledge that the company he referred to was Marvel, owned by Disney, and that first major project as Ant-Man.

At the time, Pace said a senior Marvel executive told him, “we’re not leaving, we’ve never seen anything like this, we love the people, we love the environment.”

The news that Captain America 3 will film here is an encouraging sign that Pace was correct to say Marvel intends to stick around in Fayette County.

Marvel superhero films have become a movie genre unto itself, with franchises including Captain America, Thor, Iron Man, The Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy and now Ant-Man. New films and sequels are released each year, and Marvel has said there are already long term plans to continue making and releasing these films until at least 2021.

There doesn’t seem to be any superhero fatigue for audiences as of yet. The recently released Guardians of the Galaxy was a huge hit, raking in around $260 million domestically so far, despite being based on fairly obscure source material compared to other Marvel franchises. That’s a huge number that makes Guardians of the Galaxy the biggest domestic earner of 2014 ahead of Transformers: Age of Extinction and Captain America: The Winter Soldier, according to Forbes.

Captain America 3 is expected to begin production in April, 2015 and is slated to be released May 6, 2016.
