Deputies jail Fayette County jailer

fcso_badge_webA Fayette County Sheriff’s deputy assigned to jail duty was arrested early Wednesday morning on felony and misdemeanor charges for allegedly supplying an inmate with a cell phone.

According to Sheriff Barry Babb, his Internal Affairs Unit began an investigation on 39-year-old Deputy Theresa Delgado on Aug. 2 based on tips from colleagues that she had violated her oath of office in supplying contraband to an inmate.

“Once this information was verified, the deputy was terminated by the Sheriff’s Office for violation of policy, and a criminal investigation was begun by the Criminal Investigation Division,” Babb said.

Delgado, a Fairburn resident, had been employed by the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office for five years and four months. She turned herself in around 3 a.m. Wednesday on charges of felony Violation of Oath by Public Officer, felony Providing Cell Phone to Inmate, and misdemeanor Fourth-Degree Forgery.

Delgado was released on a $9,000 bond later Wednesday morning.

“This is an ongoing problem throughout county jails and state prisons nationwide,” Babb said. “We are very aware that our staff can be our weakest link for contraband to be smuggled into our jail.

Our jail staff as a whole does an excellent job under very demanding conditions every day,” Babb continued. “It is the hardest job in public safety. I’m thankful that our vigilant jail staff notified command of a possible issue even against one of their own.

“It always cuts you deep when one tarnishes their badge however, we will police ourselves with the same measure as we do others,” Babb said. “We will not tolerate any less.”
