Fayetteville considering ‘reverse-angle parking’ at Old Courthouse

While City of Fayetteville officials have worked hard this year to educate downtown guests of the hundreds of free parking spaces already available, they are now considering a cutting-edge idea that could add even more parking spaces adjacent to the Old Courthouse grounds.
Community Development Director Brian Wismer last week presented city council members with conceptual drawings that showed something called “reverse-angle parking” being installed on the south side of the Old Courthouse. Currently, there are nine parallel parking spaces along the southern courthouse lawn sidewalk, but Wismer says the new plan could increase that to approximately 16 spaces.
The idea is that, instead of parking parallel to the sidewalk, drivers would pull up and then reverse into angled spaces that back up to the sidewalk. When they leave, they would have better visibility when entering the roadway.
Wismer noted that, because the left lane is not a continuation of the eastbound left lane of Hwy. 54 at that intersection with Hwy. 85, it will take pressure off drivers to hurry up and park. He said this isn’t an approach he would want to try yet in other parts of the city, but he says this one area seems ideal to give the concept a try.
Wismer was given a verbal green light from each city councilman to go to the drawing board and further develop a plan proposal, which would be presented at a future city council meeting for approval.
“It’s just a simple back-in,” Wismer said. “We think it’s a good idea.”
Wismer said the project would be piloted by the city’s Main Street committee.
