Fayetteville qualifying ends, two seats contested

Qualifying for mayor and two city council seats in Fayetteville ended at 4:30 this afternoon, and the final results are that incumbent Mayor Greg Clifton will be challenged this fall by Mayor Pro-Tem Ed Johnson, newcomer Harland Shirley will run unopposed for Johnson’s vacated Post 1 city council seat, and newcomer Kathaleen Brewer will challenge incumbent City Councilman Mickey Edwards for his Post 2 seat. Brewer is the daughter of former Fayetteville City Councilman Glenn Brewer.

Brewer had also qualified on Wednesday to run for mayor, but she reportedly withdrew her paperwork today and qualified for city council Post 2.

Below is the county-wide qualification update as of Wednesday afternoon. Thursday updates will be posted as they are made available.

Down in Brooks, incumbent Town Councilman Todd Speer qualified Wednesday to seek reelection to his Post 5 seat, and newcomer Brian Paul Davis, a local firefighter, has qualified to run for the town’s Post 4 seat, which is currently held by Jake Kunz. It has been reported that Kunz is not seeking reelection.

Brooks’ other seat up for election this year is Town Council Post 3, currently held by Ted Britt. As of late Wednesday afternoon, no one had qualified for that seat.

Fayette County’s elections office reported that incumbent Kenny Wright qualified Wednesday to run for reelection to his Post 1 Woolsey Town Council seat, and there are so far no challengers. Frank Carden is the Post 2 councilman, but as of Wednesday afternoon, no one had qualified to run in that election.

Over in Tyrone, Town Mayor Eric Dial officially qualified Wednesday to seek reelection, which came one day after challenger Derrick Jackson qualified to run for that seat. Dial beat Jackson in 2011 to fill the then-open seat.

Post 1 Tyrone Town Councilwoman Linda Howard qualified Monday to seek reelection. As of Thursday afternoon, she is running unopposed.

Incumbent Tyrone Town Councilman Ryan Housley will face challenger Wil James in the Post 2 race.

There was no news from Peachtree City’s qualifying authorities today (Wednesday), but Councilman Eric Imker’s soon-to-be-vacated Post 1 seat is reportedly being sought by at least three candidates: Shayne Robinson, Kim Westwood and Phil Prebor. Only Prebor has qualified to run thus far.

Peachtree City’s Post 2 city council seat, currently held by Mike King, is up for grabs this fall as well, but only King so far has qualified to run.

Fayetteville’s qualifying ended Thursday afternoon. The others end Friday afternoon.
