Gov. Deal hints Ga. Film Academy could come to Fayetteville

Reports of Governor Nathan Deal’s trip to England this week offered some interesting tidbits as to where the film industry may be heading for Fayette County and Georgia in general.

An Atlanta Business Chronicle story from Thursday recounted comments made by Deal to the Georgia Research Alliance Thursday morning, in which he confirmed that he and his team visited Pinewood Studios headquarters in Buckinghamshire, which is outside of London.

Deal’s comments indicated, among other things, that the recently discussed Georgia Film Academy could be located near Pinewood Studios Atlanta in Fayetteville.

The Atlanta Business Chronicle article noted Deal said, “Pinewood’s executives were pleased to hear about his proposed new academy to train Georgians for jobs in the film industry, and he mentioned there was an existing building at the Fayetteville location that could be used for training.”

The building referred to is presumably the former Rivers Elementary, which was purchased from the school system to serve as a support facility for the studios. Situated just across the street from Pinewood, the former elementary school has been discussed as a possible location for a number of uses. Film related education has been among those mentioned.

The story also suggested that Pinewood heads in England are of the same mind as Governor Deal in that tax credits for film production should remain in place. Tax credits have been a primary driver of the movement of filming production operations from state to state, as they are in many industries where companies seek to locate where they can operate most cheaply.
