A home on Porter Road in southern Fayette County was completely destroyed by fire Wednesday morning, but officials with the Fayette County Department of Fire and Emergency Services have reported that there were no occupants in the house at the time.

According to Deputy Fire Chief Tom Bartlett, the call went out at 5:50 a.m. Wednesday when a neighbor on Dana Drive heard popping sounds and then saw the glow of the house fire in the distance. Bartlett, who lives nearby and arrived on the scene first, said some of that popping was from fireworks stored inside the home being lit. He said he saw fireworks shooting through the top of the house.

Bartlett also said the house was completely engulfed by the time the call went out and firefighters arrived.

“That’s one of those that all you can do is protect everything around it,” Bartlett said.

Bartlett noted that firefighters at first did not know the house was unoccupied, and rescue efforts resulted in one firefighter having to be treated for heat exhaustion. He said a married couple lived in the home, and they were away on a trip when the house caught fire. He said they learned about the fire when the department finally reached them by phone.

In the meantime, Bartlett said they weren’t sure if people were in the house or not, so they treated the scene as a rescue situation.

“The neighbors told us what they drove, and that vehicle wasn’t there,” Bartlett said, adding that they still looked for people in the house.

Because the house was built so far from fire hydrants, three tankers and a pumper tanker were reportedly used to get water where it was needed. Station Five on Hwy. 85 South was the primary responder.
