Volleyball state playoffs open up for Fayette squads

Last weekend was a fruitful one for Fayette’s volleyball squad. The dust settled on the state’s region tournaments, and two teams emerged victorious.

McIntosh, reigning state champions, claimed their region championship with a thrilling comeback win over Starr’s Mill. The Panthers won the first two sets 25-18 and 25-20 to put the Chiefs on the brink of elimination. McIntosh stormed back to win three straight sets (25-14, 25-15, 15-8) to win the region title.

McIntosh’s senior Libero, Liana DeJourdan, led the way with 23 digs and three aces. Maddison Scruggs tallied with 15 assits. Nell Copeland notched 14 assists, eight kills, and nine digs.

Sandy Creek again won their region with a victory over Woodward Academy. After Woodward took the first set (25-16), the Patriots stormed back to take three straight sets (25-23, 25-13, 29-27) and win the region.

Alexis Broadwater led the team with 41 assists, seven kills, and two aces. Kendall Wilson had 18 kills with Autumn Martin adding 11. Dariah Powell tallied nine kills and two blocks. Senior Libero Maha Raslan, Broadwater, and Martin tied for the lead in digs.

McIntosh opened their title defense at home on Thursday against Alexander. The Chiefs won the opening round matchup 3-0.

Sandy Creek opened on Wednesday at home versus Arabia Mountain. The Patriots won 3-0.

Three other squads also qualified for the state tournament.
