Whitewater loses to Carrollton 21-20 in overtime heartbreaker

One play, one extra point to be exact, was the difference in a gutwrenching 21-20 overtime loss for Whitewater. A missed extra point kept the Wildcats from pushing Friday’s game into a second overtime. Instead, the Carrollton Trojans got to head home with a region victory.

Whitewater got a big effort on both sides of the ball from Christian Wafford. Wafford set up both touchdowns in regulation, then found the end zone himself for the overtime score. On offense, his 39-yard run set up the first points of the night. On defense, his interception and long return set up the second.

The defensive battle saw the first points hit the scoreboard on Whitewater’s first attempt. After Wafford’s long run, Jay Ashley punched it in from four yards out.

Carrollton took advantage of good field position after recovering an attempted onside kick, capping it out with a short score to tie the game at 7-7.

Ashley was again the beneficiary of Wafford’s big play, running it in from three yards out after the interception.

The 14-7 lead would last into the second half before Carrollton could tie it up, eventually leading to overtime.

The Trojans got the ball first and punched it in to force the Wildcats’ hand. Wafford was up to the next, slicing up the defense for what should have led to a second overtime. Instead, a miss on the ensuing extra point allowed the Trojans to claim victory.

Whitewater, now 4-3, will host Fayette County this Friday.
